Vitalink is a secure digital platform created by the Flemish government to enable electronic sharing of health data among healthcare providers and patients. Its main purpose is to improve collaboration in healthcare by allowing authorized professionals (e.g., general practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, hospitals) to consult and update shared patient information such as medication schemes, vaccination records and summaries of electronic health records (e.g., Sumehr).
I was involved at the very early stages, and came up, together with a colleague, with the security foundations based on threshold encryption. Threshold encryption is a cryptographic mechanism that does not use one decryption key, but splits the secret key into several parts. To decrypt the data, multiple parties must collaborate. This improves the security and allows any party to block the functioning of the system in case of mistrust. I also designed a first code prototype, did the dimensioning and designed the conceptual and functional architecture.
